Moldova's newly appointed Agriculture Minister, Radu Musteata, resigned on Friday, just three days after taking office. His departure follows media reports suggesting past ties to the Democratic Party, which was led by businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc, who was recently sentenced to 19 years in prison for fraud related to a $1 billion banking sector theft.
Musteata, who is not currently affiliated with any political party, denied being a member of the Democratic Party, despite media publications of photographs showing him at party events and being presented with a membership card. He stated that his decision to resign was aimed at preserving public confidence in the new cabinet, which was approved by parliament on Tuesday and is tasked with carrying out important reforms.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan accepted Musteata's resignation. Plahotniuc, a significant political figure and one of Moldova's wealthiest individuals, was convicted in April. He has denied wrongdoing and was personally accused of receiving substantial sums from three of Moldova's largest banks during his leadership of the Democratic Party from 2016 to 2019.
