OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for over $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging has raised approximately $30 million in prior funding.
The company was established by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously led the team responsible for Apple's Portrait Mode. Glass Imaging leverages AI and neural networks to enhance image quality directly within the camera system, addressing the physical size limitations of smartphone cameras, rather than relying on post-capture editing.
OpenAI has not yet commented on the acquisition. The AI company is reportedly exploring its own hardware ventures, including smartphones and AI companion devices.
