Myanmar arrests 21 over alleged donations to opposition fundraising platform

Myanmar's military-backed government has arrested 21 individuals it claims transferred money to an online fundraising platform associated with the opposition National Unity Government (NUG). The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that authorities identified over 2,700 people who allegedly provided financial support to the People's Revolution Supply Family (PRF) website, which was established by the NUG.

The arrested individuals reside in various townships across Myanmar and will face legal action. The report indicated that investigations will continue, and financial accounts linked to this funding will be closed and confiscated.

Myanmar has been in a state of political turmoil and conflict since the military overthrew a civilian government in February 2021. The NUG, a parallel civilian administration formed by remnants of Aung San Suu Kyi's party and anti-coup groups, has not immediately responded to a request for comment. The NUG-aligned People's Defence Force and ethnic armed organizations are currently engaged in fighting against military forces nationwide. The junta has designated the NUG and its allies as "terrorist organizations" and has dismissed the ASEAN bloc's peace plan.
