The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the White House have intensified their public messaging on immigration enforcement, using more aggressive language and increasing mentions of terms like "ICE" and "illegal aliens." This shift, observed in social media posts reviewed by POLITICO, aims to appease immigration hardliners who have criticized the administration for insufficient enforcement and a lack of mass deportations.
Since July, DHS has commonly referred to "hunting" immigrants unlawfully in the country and has increasingly derided opposition to deportation policies from the "radical left." This public relations campaign reflects an awareness within the administration that immigration hawks and MAGA allies have intensified pressure, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on mass deportations and decrying a perceived lack of enforcement at businesses and work sites.
In a recent interview, Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary, stated, "our base wants mass deportation. We need mass deportation." He also touted immigration enforcement statistics, suggesting the agency is "doing it in a different way" and trying to "turn down the temperature."
President Biden, during a convention speech, also highlighted the administration’s progress on immigration, particularly a clampdown at the southern border, and claimed, "We have the lowest level of illegal immigration ever recorded in our country."
White House spokesperson Lauren Bis stated, "of course" the White House will "post about one of the greatest successes: ending Biden’s invasion of our country and removing criminal illegal aliens from American communities." She added, "Thanks to President Trump’s strong immigration enforcement policies, approximately three million illegals have left the United States and zero illegals have been released at the border in fifteen months."
