Micron will pay $600 million to settle a patent dispute with Netlist over memory chips, including high bandwidth memory technology. The settlement includes $30 million per quarter for a five-year license to Netlist's patent portfolio. This resolves a dispute that saw Netlist win a $445 million verdict against Micron in 2024.

The settlement resolves a significant patent dispute, allowing Micron to continue utilizing Netlist's high bandwidth memory technology without further legal challenges and potentially impacting the cost and availability of AI-related memory chips.
Micron Technology Inc. has agreed to pay $600 million to settle a patent dispute with Netlist Inc. over the latter's memory chip technology. The agreement, announced by Netlist on Tuesday, includes a five-year license to Netlist's patent portfolio, which encompasses "high bandwidth memory" technology.
Under the terms of the settlement, Micron will pay $30 million per quarter for the duration of the license. This resolution comes after Netlist had previously won a $445 million patent infringement verdict against Micron in a Texas federal court in 2024. In September, Netlist also filed a new complaint against Micron at the US International Trade Commission, seeking to block imports of Micron chips used in products for AI computing by companies like Google, Nvidia, and Broadcom.
Netlist CEO C.K. Hong stated that the agreement with Micron further validates the value of their AI memory technologies and reiterated the company's commitment to protecting its intellectual property while investing in future products. Micron spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
