Welsh actor Matthew Rhys achieved a historic feat at the Emmy Awards, becoming the first individual to secure two lead acting prizes in a single evening. Rhys was honored for his performances in the supernatural Apple comedy "Widow's Bay" and the psychological Netflix thriller "The Beast in Me".
Accepting his second award, Rhys paid tribute to the people of Wales, calling them a "small but mighty nation" that "punch higher than our weight sometimes". He won best lead actor in a limited series for "The Beast in Me" and best lead actor in a comedy for "Widow's Bay".
Rhys trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) and was inspired by fellow Welsh actors Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins. His early education at Welsh-speaking schools, Ysgol Melin Gruffydd and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, provided him with "lots of drama and school performances". A former schoolmate, Gethin Jones, recalled performing with Rhys in an Elvis show. Rhys's career has included roles such as Kevin Walker in "Brothers & Sisters" and Dylan Thomas in "The Edge of Love". He is also an ambassador for Into Film Cymru. Despite his success, Rhys has spoken of periods of drought in his career, which he says "keeps you humble". He is set to film a second series of "Widow's Bay" in 2027 and will appear in the BBC drama "Dragon Slayers". He also voices Han Solo in "Star Wars: A New Hope" in Welsh.
