Sanchez's jury trial had been scheduled to begin Tuesday but had been rescheduled five times since its initial December start date. The incident involved Sanchez and a truck driver named Perry Tole. A police affidavit alleges that Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, accosted Tole after Tole backed his truck into a hotel's loading docks. Tole claims Sanchez entered his truck without permission and physically shoved him, leading Tole to use pepper spray in self-defense. When Sanchez advanced, Tole reportedly used a knife. Sanchez was hospitalized with stab wounds to his upper right torso, while Tole suffered a face laceration.
Sanchez, who had a 10-year NFL career before retiring in 2019, was released by Fox Sports in November and replaced by Drew Brees. Sanchez had joined Fox Sports as a game analyst in 2021. Tole has also filed a civil lawsuit against Sanchez.
