Lloyds Banking Group experienced an app outage on Wednesday, impacting thousands of customers and preventing them from accessing services. The financial group, which includes Lloyds, Halifax, and Scottish Widows, stated it was working to restore services quickly. Downdetector, a platform for tracking outages, saw a spike of nearly three thousand complaints during the early afternoon.
Users took to social media to express frustration, with one noting the increasing frequency of app issues and another referencing the group's announcement about potentially scrapping the Halifax brand. This incident marks the second time in just over a week that the Lloyds app has gone down, following an earlier outage this month. The bank had also experienced a significant tech issue earlier in the year that allowed over 400,000 users access to strangers' transactions.
A spokesperson for Lloyds confirmed that the apps were back up and running, apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the temporary difficulties. In a separate but related event, UK fintech Monzo initiated a stand-in backup service after its own outage left customers unable to use its services.
A Treasury Committee report from March revealed that nine of the UK's largest banks and building societies experienced over 803 hours of downtime in the preceding two years. Barclays reported the highest number of outages at 33, totaling 93 hours, while HSBC had 32 incidents resulting in 176 hours of downtime.
