Keiko Fujimori's Popular Force party has secured the presidency of Peru's Senate in an alliance with the conservative Popular Renewal party. Miguel Torres was elected Senate president with 30 votes out of 60, and Alejandro Muñante secured the first vice presidency. This development comes as Peru reinstates its bicameral congressional system for the first time in over three decades, just days before Fujimori's presidential inauguration for the 2026-2031 term.
Torres stated that the new leadership aims for a more prudent state and to restore public trust. The newly formed bicameral Congress faces the significant challenge of addressing the ongoing governance crisis in Peru, which has seen eight presidents in the past decade, with no single political force holding a majority.
Torres, who previously served as a legislator from 2016 to 2020, will lead the Senate for a one-year term. He also holds the position of Peru's second vice president-elect, elected alongside Fujimori and first vice president Luis Galarreta. President-elect Fujimori also named Elmer Cuba as Economy Minister, Carlos Espa as Foreign Minister, and Luis Galarreta as Prime Minister.
