Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has announced new dates for the country's long-delayed presidential and general elections, aiming for a first-round vote on December 13, with a second round and local elections scheduled for February 21. The final results are expected by March 7.
These elections have been postponed multiple times since 2019, primarily due to escalating insecurity caused by powerful armed gangs and a lack of funding. The country has been without elected officials since January 2023.
Following months of negotiations, Haiti's government and the CEP have agreed on a $120 million budget to finance the electoral process. This figure represents a compromise from the CEP's initial proposal of $250 million, with input from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and international partners like the UN Integrated Office in Haiti, UNDP, and UNOPS.
Previous attempts to set election dates, including those proposed for August and December 2026, were delayed. The current timeline aims to restore democratic governance after a period of political instability, including the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 and the subsequent leadership transitions.
