Japan to back oil pipelines bypassing Strait of Hormuz

The plan involves assisting Middle Eastern oil-producing nations, specifically the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, which are already expanding their pipeline infrastructure to transport crude oil without relying on the Strait of Hormuz. These countries have requested Japan's involvement in these projects.

The Petroleum Association of Japan, through its president Kito Shunichi, has indicated that the industry is willing to explore supporting these pipeline efforts in conjunction with the government. Kito, who also chairs major oil wholesaler Idemitsu Kosan, expressed regret over the volatile situation in the Middle East and emphasized the importance of alternative routes for ensuring a stable supply of crude oil.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is scheduled to announce this strategy at the Green Transformation Implementation Council meeting. The initiative reflects a broader effort by Japan's oil industry to secure diverse and reliable sources of crude oil beyond traditional, potentially vulnerable, shipping lanes.
