Israeli settlers shot and killed a Palestinian man and injured another in an attack on the village of Yasuf in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, according to Palestinian officials.
Mashour Yassin, 51, was shot and killed outside his home on the outskirts of Yasuf. Village council head Jumaa Abdel Fattah stated that the assailants came from the direction of a settler outpost established near the village approximately two months prior. Fattah added that settlers have been attacking the village continuously since the outpost was established.
The Israeli military said it was investigating the incident. Rights groups contend that the increasing settler presence near villages is part of a campaign to seize land in the territory where Palestinians aim to establish a state.
Israel captured the West Bank in 1967 and it has remained under Israeli military occupation. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has overseen a significant expansion of Jewish outposts. The UN and most countries consider Israeli settlements illegal under international law, a view Israel disputes, stating the territory's status is disputed.
