Indian pilot Smit Machchhar recounted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi how he opened the cockpit door of a Flydubai flight while being attacked by his co-pilot, an act that allowed others to intervene and avert a potential disaster. The flight, bound for Tel Aviv from Dubai, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar described being on the floor and injured but determined to open the door from the inside. "I was still being attacked when I managed to opened the door. Then others came in and also played a role [in controlling the situation]. I was of course fighting for my own life but at the same time I knew I was not going to let others die," he told PM Modi.
According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Machchhar was seriously injured after being stabbed but continued to resist. Passengers and other crew members then entered the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker. The aircraft, a Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating as flight FZ1073, transmitted emergency codes, including squawk 7700 (general emergency) and 7500 (unlawful interference), prompting Israel to scramble fighter jets.
Prime Minister Modi praised Machchhar's courage, stating, "Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar."
