India has withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup to prioritize a high-profile friendly match against five-time World Cup winner Brazil on October 3, 2026, in Kolkata. The decision by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) means the national team will not participate in the new tournament, which is scheduled to run from September 21 to October 6.
The AIFF stated that it could not participate in both the ASEAN Cup and the friendly against Brazil due to the overlapping FIFA international window. AIFF deputy secretary general M. Satyanarayanan explained that the federation was unable to play both matches, and AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey echoed this, citing the commitment made to the Brazil football federation.
An attempt to field a developmental or reserve squad in the ASEAN Cup was reportedly not permitted by FIFA rules. This left the AIFF with the choice between the two commitments, with Brazil ultimately being prioritized.
The Brazil friendly is reportedly a significant financial undertaking, with an estimated package of 60 to 70 crore rupees funded by sponsorships, ticket sales, and the West Bengal state government. Some stakeholders suggest the match also carries political weight for AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey ahead of the next AIFF presidential election.
However, the decision has not been universally supported. Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia reportedly argued during an AIFF Executive Committee meeting that the federation should have prioritized participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup with the first team.
