Iceland supermarket to open first UK high street store in Falkland Islands

Richard Walker, Iceland's executive chair, expressed pride in the expansion, stating it was an ambition to support the Falklands as part of the "British family." He plans to visit personally for the official opening.

The expansion comes shortly after Argentine President Javier Milei intensified his nation's sovereignty claims over the islands, which Argentina refers to as the Malvinas. Milei stated that the US was re-evaluating its historic position on the matter and criticized the UK's perceived decline.

Milei also pledged sanctions against oil companies operating in the territory. On Monday, Argentina confirmed it would file criminal charges against Israeli energy company Navitas Petroleum and its executives for their operations in the Falklands.

Separately, a proposed joint venture for a salmon farm by local fishing company Fortuna and Danish firm F-land ApS is facing local opposition, primarily due to environmental concerns. Salmon Free Falklands (SFF), a local group, is advocating for a referendum on the project.
