Huawei licenses Wi-Fi tech to HP in multi-year patent deal

Huawei Technologies announced a multi-year cross-licence agreement with HP Inc. covering patents for Wi-Fi technology, including the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard. The deal grants both companies access to each other's patents, though financial terms were not disclosed. HP characterized the agreement as a standard-essential patent licence for technology used broadly across the industry, rather than a broader strategic relationship.

Huawei has been expanding its patent portfolio and licensing business, having previously reached settlements with companies like Amazon. The company stated it is among the leading holders of patents for Wi-Fi 6 and has set a fee of 50 cents per consumer device using its Wi-Fi 6 technology, with over 1.6 billion devices expected to have used its inventions by the end of 2025. This new direct deal covers a broader set of Huawei's Wi-Fi patents, including Wi-Fi 7.

The agreement follows a lawsuit Huawei filed against HP in Europe in August 2025 over alleged unauthorized use of a Wi-Fi 6 patent. HP later joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool, ending legal actions. Huawei has faced U.S. trade restrictions since 2019, limiting its access to certain U.S.-origin technology, but these restrictions do not automatically bar patent-licensing agreements. HP is the world's second-largest PC maker with a 21.3% market share.
