Yemen's Houthis seize strategic island, tighten grip on Bab el-Mandeb Strait

The Houthi control of Perim Island and the surrounding area potentially tightens their grip on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a waterway through which a significant portion of global trade and oil shipments pass. Experts have noted a reduced U.S. military presence in the region compared to the Strait of Hormuz.

Sources indicate that Iranian arms and advice directly supported the Houthi offensive, marking a new front against U.S. interests. The seizure of Mocha and subsequent advances down the Red Sea coast also threaten oil exports, including those routed through Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline.

Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council head, Rashad al-Alimi, has called for international assistance to protect the country's coastlines in light of the Houthi territorial gains.
