Google integrates AI study tools into Search and Gemini

The company is positioning Gemini as a go-to AI assistant for students, intensifying competition with rivals like OpenAI and education technology startups such as Knowt and Gauth.

Within Google Search, users can now generate custom tools and simulations to understand complex subjects, with examples including an interactive pH scale visualization. Follow-up questions can lead to tailored interactive experiences. Search will also provide customized practice quizzes on demand for subjects ranging from science to foreign languages, including prompts for standardized test preparation like the SAT.

In the coming weeks, Lens within Search will introduce an interactive learning experience where users can upload images of their work for AI-powered concept explanations, mistake identification, and guidance. Additionally, Search can now compile uploaded files, such as handwritten notes and lecture slides, into concise one-page summaries.

Gemini is gaining new capabilities, including the generation of multi-step research reports that users can discuss conversationally, even while the AI works in the background. Users will be notified upon completion and can engage with the findings via voice. Gemini will also produce functional 3D simulations, allowing interactive exploration of concepts like DNA structure.

Furthermore, Google is launching a dedicated learning hub within the Gemini app to centralize its educational tools, offering features like study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes.
