Prerit Pathak, a 28-year-old security engineer at Google in New York City, has detailed his career pivot from software engineering to cybersecurity. Pathak, who started his career at Dell Technologies in India, found himself drawn to cybersecurity due to a childhood fascination with hacking and a desire to explore edge cases.
Despite his interest, Pathak initially pursued a software engineering role at Dell. During his time there, he honed his security research skills through academic coursework, self-study, and participation in "Capture the Flag" competitions. He also gained recognition for discovering and reporting critical vulnerabilities to various organizations, which further fueled his passion for the field.
Pathak took steps to formalize his cybersecurity expertise by establishing a local chapter of the Open Worldwide Application Security Project and later attending Carnegie Mellon University for graduate studies to specialize in information security. He completed a security engineering internship at Google in 2022, which led to a full-time position in 2023 after he earned his master's degree.
In his current role at Google, Pathak conducts threat simulations and analyzes adversary behavior. He advises aspiring cybersecurity professionals to leverage their existing technical skills, emphasizing the shift in mindset required to understand system vulnerabilities. Pathak also highlights the importance of communication skills, networking, learning from mentors, and embracing failure as a learning opportunity.
