German wholesale prices saw a significant increase in August, rising by 6.8% compared to the same month in the previous year, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This acceleration in price growth follows a 5.3% year-on-year increase in July and a 4.9% rise in June. On a month-on-month basis, wholesale prices were up 0.9% in August compared to July. The Federal Statistical Office attributed the overall price increase largely to the conflict in Iran and the Middle East, which has led to higher wholesale prices for energy products and raw materials. Specific categories also saw notable increases, with food and beverages, including tobacco products, averaging 4.2% higher year-on-year. Wholesale prices for non-ferrous metals and semi-finished products from these materials experienced a substantial 21.1% year-on-year increase. Conversely, wholesale prices for solid fuels and mineral oil products decreased by 6.9% year-on-year, and recycled materials and waste costs were down 10.4% compared to August 2024.
