China's factory-gate inflation accelerated in August, with the producer price index (PPI) rising 3.8% from a year earlier, up from 3.5% in July and exceeding forecasts. This marks a regain of momentum in producer price gains.
Consumer price inflation also picked up, with the consumer price index (CPI) increasing by 0.8% year-on-year in August, compared to a 0.5% rise in July. On a month-on-month basis, CPI rose 0.4%, surpassing expectations and reversing a 0.1% decline in July.
Official data indicated that elevated energy prices, influenced by supply risks and maritime disruptions stemming from the Middle East conflict, contributed to the uptick in inflation.
