FDA to hold public hearing on psychedelic drugs as Trump-driven push gathers pace

President Trump's directive in April prioritized qualifying psychedelic drug programs for the FDA's priority-voucher program. It also tasked the FDA with collaborating with the Drug Enforcement Administration to establish a pathway for eligible patients to access investigational treatments through the Right to Try law and to enhance cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Since the initiative began, the FDA has granted priority vouchers to three companies working on psychedelic-based therapies: one for psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, another for psilocybin for major depressive disorder, and a third for methylone for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The upcoming hearing will address practical considerations for testing and administering psychedelic therapies, such as provider qualifications, patient screening, access and reimbursement, clinic capacity, and long-term safety data collection. The FDA has clarified that the hearing will not cover individual drug applications, controlled substance scheduling, or the legalization of psychedelics.

Robert Barrow, CEO of Definium Therapeutics, which is developing an LSD-based therapy, views the hearing as a valuable opportunity for ongoing dialogue among regulators, clinicians, and patients. He advocates for treating psychedelics within the framework of standard drug development, science, and medicine.

Just prior to the hearing, senior FDA officials, including Michael Davis, acting head of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, published an article in The New England Journal of Medicine. The paper outlined a framework for the development and approval of psychedelic drugs, stating the agency was prepared to address challenging conditions like major depressive disorder and PTSD.

Analysts at Jefferies noted that the FDA's framework suggests a willingness to consider flexible trial designs to overcome obstacles such as "functional unblinding," where a drug's psychoactive effects can reveal to participants whether they received the active treatment. The agency has indicated potential solutions like questionnaires, blinded central raters, and the use of lower doses or active comparators that mimic mild psychological effects.

The administration's support has reportedly boosted investor interest in the sector, with industry executives suggesting it could improve coordination between the FDA and DEA and potentially shorten regulatory delays, though researchers caution that approved treatments are still likely years away. Analysts believe continued alignment among regulators, clinicians, and developers on a safe rollout would benefit companies including Atai, Beckley, Compass Pathways, Definium Therapeutics, Helus Pharma, and GH Research.
