FBI Director Kash Patel to face Senate grilling over travel, 2020 election probe

Patel's appearance comes shortly after the abrupt resignation of Joe DiGenova, who had been leading an investigation aimed at proving the former president was a victim of a criminal conspiracy. Patel is likely to be questioned about the implications and reasons behind DiGenova's departure.

This will be Patel's first appearance before the Senate since May, when he was pressed by Democrats over media reports suggesting his drinking habits interfered with his ability to lead the FBI. Patel defended his leadership at the time, denying the reports and stating he had contributed to a reduction in nationwide crime.

More recently, Patel has appeared with President Trump to highlight a trend of declining violent crime. He has also established a partnership with China and Russia to combat transnational crime, a program that critics have labeled as dangerous and potentially undermining U.S. national security.

Patel has been a frequent subject of controversy since taking over the FBI. He previously drew criticism for media reports detailing his scuba diving at a Pearl Harbor memorial and for drinking beer with the U.S. men's hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Milan. This scrutiny has extended to Republicans, including Senator Grassley, who in a May 5 letter sought information regarding Patel's use of government planes, luxury cars, and other taxpayer funds.

Additionally, Patel may face questions concerning his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, particularly in light of recently released text messages showing him ordering a top aide to respond to anonymous social media accounts mocking the investigation.
