Ethiopian Airlines is reportedly on the verge of placing an order for up to 10 long-haul Boeing freighters, a move that could bolster its cargo capacity and support its ambitions for a new African hub to rival Gulf carriers. The deal is expected to comprise current-generation 777F aircraft and the newer, albeit delayed, 777-8F model.
Sources indicate the order could range from eight to 10 aircraft, with the inclusion of two 777F models serving to bridge the gap until the 777-8F becomes available. Boeing is currently producing two 777F freighters monthly. The planemaker is facing a production deadline for the 777F at the end of 2027 due to international emissions rules. However, delays in the certification of the 777X family, which includes the 777-8F, have prompted Boeing to request a waiver from the FAA. This waiver would allow the delivery of an additional 35 777F freighters beyond the end-of-2027 deadline, a request that remains pending. Boeing is confident that the exemption will be granted, enabling them to continue meeting market demand until the new 777-8F enters service.
