China and the United States have reached several agreements following President Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington, including a commitment for China to import at least 10 million tonnes of US coal annually for two years. This marks one of the few concrete outcomes from the summit, which analysts described as a "managed stalemate" with limited substantive progress.
In addition to the coal imports, both nations have agreed to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods exchanged between them. China will lower tariffs on 1,619 US products, encompassing agricultural goods, cosmetics, and medical devices. Reciprocally, the US will reduce levies on Chinese goods such as toys, home appliances, and holiday gifts. The trade truce between the two countries has also been extended until January 10, 2027.
The summit, while showcasing diplomatic pageantry, did not significantly narrow differences or reduce mutual suspicions between the two economic powers. The absence of a Chinese CEO delegation highlighted challenges in overcoming US suspicion of Chinese investment, casting doubt on a proposed two-way investment scheme. While the US secured some tariff reductions beneficial to American farmers ahead of midterm elections, key exports like soybeans were not included in China's list.
