A British woman, Lisa Fryett, 47, has died from injuries sustained after being trapped in a wildfire in Spain. Fryett and her partner, Simon Batchelor, were on holiday near Bédar when the blaze erupted on July 9. They were trapped in their rented villa for up to six hours before being rescued by emergency services.
Fryett was taken to a hospital in Seville, where she died on July 28, nearly three weeks after the incident. Her provisional cause of death was extensive burns. Her partner, Simon Batchelor, remained in a critical condition. The couple were from Canvey Island, Essex.
The wildfire was one of the deadliest in Spain's Almeria province, killing at least 14 people, including several Britons. It burned through approximately 7,000 hectares of land. A GoFundMe page set up for Fryett's family has raised over £65,000.
Area coroner Michelle Brown stated that Fryett's death was due to "extensive burns-related changes." An inquest into her death will be scheduled for a later date. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it was in contact with Spanish authorities and supporting the family.
