Hollywood star Angelina Jolie visited Kharkiv in late August, marking her third unannounced trip to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. During her visit, Jolie met with Ukrainian teachers and coaches who continue their work despite relentless Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure. She noted that classrooms have been built inside metro stations and other schools are fully underground to protect children.
Jolie visited a sports studio in North Saltivka, a heavily impacted Kharkiv neighborhood, where young athletes continue to train. She also visited Aza Nizi Maza, an inclusive art studio for children. In the Carpathians, she met women raising children alone while advocating for their husbands' release from Russian captivity.
Separately, Jolie paid her respects to the family of Oleksii Yukov, head of Platsdarm, a group involved in dangerous body recovery missions in eastern Ukraine. Yukov was killed in early August during an exhumation mission near the front line.
