Ukraine to receive $841 million from World Bank amid budget deficit

Ukraine is set to receive $841 million in budget support from the World Bank, with guarantees provided by Canada, Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi announced on September 14, 2026. This financial assistance comes at a critical time as Ukraine faces significant budget deficits and fiscal imbalances, prompting strict limits on non-defense spending.

The funds are designated for social and humanitarian expenditures and will be used to reimburse pension payments from the state budget. Koretskyi described the support as "crucial and timely" amid the challenging fiscal situation.

The World Bank's Public Expenditures of Administrative Capacity Endurance (PEACE) in Ukraine project, established in June 2022, has so far mobilized a total of $53.5 billion to aid Kyiv during Russia's full-scale war. Ukraine's Cabinet is scheduled to present a draft budget to parliament by September 15 for review and amendments.

Separately, Canada is reportedly in discussions to contribute to the European Union's 90 billion-euro ($105 billion) support loan for Ukraine. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by the Financial Times on September 13, Canada aims to finalize its contribution size by the EU-Canada Summit in October.
