Google's latest Android feature drop introduces several enhancements, including expanded Gemini capabilities and new functionalities for Google Messages. Starting today, users across the Android ecosystem will receive these updates, with some features requiring specific OS versions.
For devices running Android 16 or higher, Gemini can now log the locations of items that do not have tracker tags attached. Users can instruct Gemini to remember where they placed an item, optionally including a photo, with this information being stored in the Find Hub. This feature allows users to recall item locations via Gemini or by checking Find Hub directly.
Gemini Live is also gaining a new accessibility feature called Guided Vision. This tool assists users in locating objects within the camera frame or extracting difficult-to-read information, such as text in low-light conditions. Guided Vision interprets the camera feed to help users find objects and can even indicate the distance to a hand. It will be accessible through system Accessibility shortcuts and the TalkBack menu, functioning on most Android phones from Android 9 Pie onward.
Google Messages is receiving updates to enhance its utility and appearance. Users can now access Google Keep directly from a conversation via the '+' menu to instantly create a shared note. This Keep overlay allows users to stay within Messages while creating and sharing notes with conversation participants. Additionally, message threads can be personalized with chat themes, allowing users to select system wallpapers or personal photos. The app will adapt text bubble colors based on the chosen image or allow manual color selection.
Lastly, the Motion Assist feature, designed to help alleviate motion sickness by displaying floating dots that respond to vehicle motion, is now an official part of Android 17. While not exclusive to Pixel devices, its availability will be limited to a select range of devices. Motion Assist can be accessed through Google Services settings, Quick Settings tiles, or configured to activate automatically when the phone detects movement.
