Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, stated that an Israeli attack on Beirut indicates the US cannot or will not uphold commitments, rendering peace talks pointless. The comments came after an Israeli strike on Beirut's Dahiyeh district, which killed at least three people and wounded 15, and which Israel claimed was in response to Hezbollah attacks.
Iran warned of retaliation for the strikes, casting doubt on a US-Iran peace deal that was reportedly set to be signed Sunday. President Trump commented that the Israeli attacks on Beirut 'should not have happened' and could hinder the peace process. He stated that while Israel has the right to defend itself, the attack it was responding to was 'very small and meaningless' and should not disrupt the important process.
The Israeli army stated it was targeting Hezbollah infrastructure. The Israeli military also said it is bracing for a possible retaliatory strike by Iran. Lebanon's state media reported at least three people were killed and 15 injured in the strike. The IDF said it targeted a 'command centre' used by Hezbollah after the group launched 'aerial targets toward Israel'. Trump added that there should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but also no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel.
Brig Gen Mohammad Jafar Assadi, a senior Iranian military official, warned that the Israeli attack on the Beirut suburbs would not go 'unanswered'.
