‘Nobody appears to care’: Bowen’s Fiji climate summit mocked as leaders stay away

News24 host James Macpherson ridicules Chris Bowen’s taxpayer-funded climate summit in Fiji after just five leaders from outside the Indo-Pacific reportedly commit to attending. “The Government has spent an extraordinary amount of money preparing its climate events in the Pacific, supposedly to demonstrate Australian leadership ahead of COP31,” Mr Macpherson said. “There's just one small problem. Nobody appears to care. A fact Chris Bowen reluctantly confirmed today. “In other words, after inviting leaders from around the world to his special climate change summit, just five leaders outside the Indo-Pacific have said they'll attend. “If you call yourself a leader and no-one is following, well, you're just going for a very expensive taxpayer-funded walk around a Fiji resort, aren't you? “But if the world is so impressed by our leadership, why is the world staying away? “If it wasn't costing us millions of dollars, all of this would be pretty funny.”
