Mediterranean Sea's warming waters attracting hundreds of invasive species

Change is upon the Mediterranean Sea — scientists say rising sea temperatures are transforming one of the world's busiest and most biodiverse seas. One of the signs of a transforming ecosystem is the growing number of invasive species, with fish once confined to other regions swimming across the Mediterranean. Marine biologists have identified around 1,000 invasive species. Meanwhile, waters are projected to become up to 6°C hotter by the end of the century. Unlike the open ocean, the sea is an enclosed basin. Trapped heat cannot easily escape, making extreme marine heatwaves more frequent and intense.
