Japan seeks record US$56 billion defence budget with focus on long-range capabilities

Japan's defence ministry is seeking more than 9 trillion yen (US$56 billion) for the next fiscal year. Priorities include strengthening the country's standoff weapon systems. Japan acquires standoff missiles mostly from other countries, and it plans to order up to 400 Tomahawk missiles from the US. Another focus is what the ministry calls "new ways of warfare", including drones and artificial intelligence. Michiyo Ishida reports from Tokyo.
