US Rep. Guthrie warns against surrendering AI leadership to China

Guthrie expressed concern that China, through its state-backed companies, has developed AI technologies nearly on par with American counterparts. He highlighted the critical importance of AI for future economic growth and global standing, noting that China is already leveraging advanced AI for surveillance and control. The congressman drew parallels to past instances where US reliance on Chinese supply chains, such as in telecommunications equipment and critical minerals, created vulnerabilities.

He stressed the need for strengthening domestic supply chains, a sentiment echoed by the Biden Administration and President Donald Trump, who has stated that American supply chains should not depend on adversaries. Guthrie's committee approach to AI is built on three pillars: dominance, deployment, and safeguards. He argued that for the US to maintain dominance, it must lead in developing and deploying AI technologies at scale, requiring increased energy production and a supportive regulatory environment.

Contrasting the US model of bottom-up, free-market capitalism with China's top-down government control, Guthrie asserted that the American approach is more efficient in the long run. He also criticized European nations for what he described as overly burdensome regulations that are hindering their AI industries, urging the US not to follow a similar path. "We are not in a race with Europe to regulate. We are in a race with China to innovate," Guthrie stated.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has emphasized the importance of maintaining US leadership in AI, stating that "whoever wins AI wins." This comes as China's leader Xi Jinping has called for international cooperation and openness in AI development. However, US federal agencies and AI companies have accused Chinese firms of intellectual property theft through model distillation, a practice that has intensified the rivalry.
