President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the US, Denmark, and Greenland have reached an Arctic security pact, granting the United States permanent control over security matters on the island. Trump stated on Truth Social that the agreement "gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns" and that the US will "immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland". The pact aims to prevent any US adversary from having a base, military presence, or making sensitive investments in Greenland without explicit US approval.
The US and Denmark will formally sign the agreement next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Statements from Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the agreement falls far short of Trump’s earlier stated desire for the US to acquire Greenland. Frederiksen stated the agreement "recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination," while Nielsen said it "ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance." The US already has a presence on the island through NATO, with rights to expand bases.
Earlier this year, Trump had renewed his bid for the US to acquire Greenland at a NATO summit, threatening to withdraw US forces from Europe if the continent did not comply.
