Ukrainian journalist Mykhailo Tkach detained in Austria

Tkach was reportedly in Vienna on an editorial assignment with his colleague Yaroslav Bondarenko. Ukrainska Pravda has been unable to contact Tkach directly, although he has been able to communicate with his lawyer. Bondarenko's current whereabouts are unknown.

Tkach is known for his work exposing corruption and money laundering within President Volodymyr Zelensky's administration. Ukrainska Pravda has appealed to international journalistic and human rights organizations for support and has contacted Ukrainian diplomats to assist in securing the release of Tkach and Bondarenko.

Georgy Tykhy, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, confirmed the detention and stated that the Ukrainian Embassy in Austria has requested an explanation from Austrian authorities. A consul is reportedly in contact with Austrian officials and has officially requested access to Tkach.

Tkach was a recipient of the international Free Media Awards 2026 in Oslo on September 29 for his wartime investigative journalism. This is not the first time Tkach has faced difficulties in his reporting; he has been assaulted multiple times and was previously detained by Polish authorities in February 2024 while reporting on transit routes between Poland, Russia, and Belarus.
