Nikoliuk stated in a Facebook post that he was handing over a "fully combat-ready force capable of steadfastly conducting active defensive operations." He had led the Eastern Operational Command, responsible for defending regions including Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv oblasts, since April 2026.
