The UK government's Sovereign AI Unit, a
£500 million initiative designed to foster domestic AI innovation, is reportedly in discussions to invest in Potential Sciences, a startup focused on drug discovery. This potential investment aligns with the fund's objective to back homegrown AI founders and ensure the UK remains at the forefront of AI development.
The Sovereign AI Unit operates akin to a venture capital fund, offering more than just financial backing. Supported companies gain access to world-class compute resources, including up to one million GPU hours on the UK's largest AI supercomputers, fast-tracked visa processes for global talent, and hands-on government support for data access, procurement, and regulatory navigation.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the UK's AI capabilities, reduce reliance on overseas technology providers, and retain economic value generated by AI innovation within the country. The government views AI as a critical technology for economic prosperity and national security.
Previously, the Sovereign AI Unit announced its first equity investment in AI infrastructure startup Callosum and provided access to supercomputing capacity for six other startups, including AI biology company Prima Mente, inference cloud company Doubleword, and bioengineering company Twig Bio.
