UK armed forces ready to defend country after Iran warning

Iran's foreign ministry declared the UK an 'accomplice' in the US war, while the IRGC stated any country supporting US military actions would be responsible for the consequences. This comes after the US conducted strikes against targets in Iran. US President Donald Trump has previously criticized the UK government and former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for perceived lack of support.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham was recently notified of an extension to the agreement allowing US operations from British bases. The IRGC-linked Tasnim News Agency reported US bombing missions launched from RAF Fairford two days prior, though the UK Ministry of Defence has not commented on specific base usage this week. The UK's policy remains consistent: defending its people, interests, and allies in accordance with international law without being drawn into the wider conflict.

Previously, Iran's ambassador to London warned of a right to self-defence if the UK joined the war. Concerns exist about Iran's missile capabilities potentially reaching the UK, which is approximately 2,360 miles away. Iran has conducted strikes against US military bases in Gulf countries and attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy urged Iran to de-escalate and negotiate, emphasizing that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons. He confirmed that an RAF aircraft evacuated 63 British nationals from Tel Aviv to Cyprus, with more flights planned, and noted one British national was injured. Western officials have indicated British troops are on high readiness to respond to the Middle East conflict, which could be prolonged. US bombers are expected at British bases, including RAF Fairford, soon. HMS Dragon will be deployed to protect a British base in Cyprus struck by a drone, and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters will bolster regional defence.
