Turkey weighing Saudi defence support, ruling out offensive role

Turkey is evaluating its potential contributions to Saudi Arabia's defense under a joint defense pact signed with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in August, according to Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Speaking on Thursday, Fidan emphasized that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement is strictly defensive, meaning Turkey would not participate in offensive operations.

Fidan stated that military officials are assessing Turkey's possible contributions, which could include air defense, electronic warfare, and technical support. He noted that Saudi Arabia is already supporting Yemen's legitimate government forces in their fight against the Houthi militants. The agreement dictates that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all, prompting political and military meetings between the three nations in response to recent Houthi attacks.

Earlier in the week, officials indicated that Turkey's support would primarily be defensive and technical. Fidan mentioned that the agreement is nearing completion for parliamentary approval and is expected to be submitted soon. Turkey, which possesses a significant military and defense industry, has previously condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and expressed willingness to assist with military needs, including ensuring navigational safety in the Red Sea.
