Trump signs Greenland security deal with Denmark

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland on September 22, 2026, concluding months of tension over his previous demands to annex the territory. The deal, announced at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, grants the U.S. "permanent control over security and all other needs" in Greenland, according to Trump. He stated that the U.S. would have the "complete ability to do what is necessary to defend the American continent and also Europe and other places." The agreement explicitly prohibits any U.S. adversary from establishing a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without American written approval.

Trump also pledged to construct two "very major military bases" on the island, expressing a strong personal connection with Denmark and Greenland. At the signing ceremony, he described the agreement as the foundation for a "long-term, fantastic relationship."

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hailed the deal as beneficial for all parties involved, emphasizing its role in deterring adversaries and building upon a previous defense agreement from 75 years prior. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen affirmed Greenland's long-standing support for U.S. security since World War II, reiterating its commitment as a steadfast friend of the United States and a member of the Western alliance.
