Trump rejects Iran's proposal to open Strait of Hormuz

The proposal, submitted via Qatar, also included Iran's conditions for ending wars on all fronts and releasing an estimated $12 billion in frozen assets. Trump told reporters outside the White House on Saturday that he rejected the proposal, stating that Iran was "losing so badly" and that the deal was "not acceptable."

Araghchi had previously stated that if the necessary conditions were met, normal maritime passage through the vital shipping channel could be restored within seven days. He was speaking at the United Nations in New York, where he and other senior Iranian officials were attending the General Assembly. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil supply, and the conflict between the US and Iran has been at an impasse for nearly seven months.

Earlier in the week, Araghchi held talks with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff. The Iranian foreign minister also consulted on the plan with China, which reportedly fully supported it. Saudi Arabia had been expected to endorse a related route through the strait but pulled back partly due to anger over attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis. Iran claims it has urged the Houthis to cease attacks but does not control their decision-making.
