US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday the creation of a new task force, the "Super Intelligence Force," aimed at coordinating the government's approach to artificial intelligence and ensuring US leadership in the field. The task force will report directly to the president and will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton. Other members include Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson and Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael.
Trump stated that the "Super Intelligence Force" will engage with various groups, including consumers, public interest organizations, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and "Super Intelligence Companies." Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor has also been named as a member.
This initiative follows growing calls from industry leaders for AI regulation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in an interview published on October 4, acknowledged the risks associated with AI but argued that its benefits justify accepting some negative outcomes, emphasizing the importance of public access to the technology. A pact signed on September 29 by executives from major tech firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX, and Google committed to regulating AI.
In a related move, Trump signed an executive order on the same day as the pact to officially rename artificial intelligence as "super intelligence," stating that the term "artificial" made the technology sound "fake." Multi-billionaire Elon Musk has already adopted the new terminology, announcing on Sunday that his firm's AI platform, SpaceXAI, will be renamed SpaceXSI, calling SpaceX a "super intelligence company."
