President Trump backed Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters's reelection bid on November 6, 2026, after the party's losses in the midterm elections on November 3. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Gruters "should return as Chairman of the RNC" and called him "100 [percent] America First." Trump said Gruters had turned the RNC into "an efficient, focused, and powerful machine."
The endorsement followed an announcement by RNC co-Chair KC Crosbie, another Trump ally, that she would challenge Gruters for the role in January. In a letter announcing her challenge, Crosbie wrote that "Tuesday's results were a serious setback" and that "Democrats will control both chambers of Congress." She said voters were focused on the cost of living and the direction of the country, and that improvements in field operations and voter contact "did not address those concerns."
Democrats won key battleground states, flipped a number of red states and gained majorities in state legislatures in the midterms. According to The Hill's partner DDHQ, Democrats held a 54-44 majority in the Senate and led 253-158 for House seats as of November 6.
