President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have escalated a diplomatic dispute over a claim made by Trump that Meloni repeatedly sought a photograph with him during the recent G7 summit. Trump insisted on his social media that Meloni asked "again and again" for a photo and criticized Italy's perceived lack of cooperation regarding Iran.
Trump's initial remarks, made during an interview with an Italian broadcaster, stated that Meloni "begged" for the photo. Meloni swiftly refuted this, calling the claim "completely invented." The public exchange has led to the cancellation of a planned trip to the United States by Italy's foreign minister.
In his social media post, Trump also expressed frustration that Italy did not permit the U.S. to use its landing strips during the conflict with Iran, despite the U.S. being a leading defense spender within NATO. This complaint echoes previous concerns Trump has raised about the military alliance. Italy, a crucial logistical hub for the U.S., had previously denied U.S. bombers access to a base in Sicily without parliamentary approval in March, citing constitutional restrictions and domestic opposition to offensive operations.
Meloni responded directly to Trump, stating that his "constant and unprovoked attacks are nonsensical." She added that her popularity does not depend on her relationship with Trump and is instead tied to her ability to defend Italy's national interest. She advised Trump to focus on his own popularity.
