The outcome of Colombia's presidential election will significantly impact the nation's approach to ongoing violence, its armed conflict, and its economic policies, with potential implications for regional stability.
Colombians are voting in a presidential runoff election that pits conservative businessman Abelardo de la Espriella against progressive lawmaker Iván Cepeda. Both candidates are addressing fears of escalating internal conflict and violence in the South American nation. De la Espriella, who has secured an endorsement from U.S. President Donald Trump, proposes a stringent approach to crime, including building mega-prisons. In contrast, Cepeda aims to continue the outgoing President Gustavo Petro's 'total peace' initiative, which involves negotiating with various illegal armed groups. The election takes place amid a resurgence of violence, largely driven by groups prioritizing drug trafficking. In the first round of voting, Cepeda secured 41% of the vote, while de la Espriella received 43%. Whoever wins will grapple with high public debt and a divided Congress, which could stymie reform proposals.
