President Donald Trump asserted that his power as president has "no limits," particularly in the aftermath of a potential war with Iran. In an interview with Axios, Trump responded to questions about his authority by stating, "I know there are, but there are no limits. We defeated them totally militarily."
Trump defended a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tehran, denying that it represented a concession from his initial demand for "unconditional surrender." He stated, "But really, probably is unconditional surrender." The 14-point MOU initiates a 60-day negotiation period for talks about Iran’s nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping channel that had been closed during the conflict.
During his interview with Axios, Trump also touted the U.S. Navy’s blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which cut off access to Iranian ports. "We have the most powerful military in the world by far," Trump told the outlet. "Who else could have done a blockade like that? I did a naval blockade where not one ship was able to get through. Some tried. Didn’t last very long."
Several GOP lawmakers have raised concerns about provisions included in the MOU to lift sanctions on Iran and create a $300 billion reconstruction fund for the country. "History teaches that giving billions of dollars to theocratic lunatics who want to murder us is not a good idea. I think the president is receiving some very poor advice on this deal," Sen. Ted Cruz said.
Trump doubled down on his defense of the MOU in social media posts, writing, "The War has diminished Iran!" He claimed Tehran was "finished" and would "get no money, not ten cents!"
Trump also stated in the interview that he believes the company Anthropic poses a national security threat.
