Sharp Corp. has officially entered the artificial intelligence server market, announcing Tuesday that it has begun accepting domestic orders for AI servers. This new business initiative is a collaboration with its Taiwanese parent company, Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.).
The servers are designed to support AI training and inference, utilizing Nvidia Corp.'s latest AI platform. Foxconn will manage the procurement and manufacturing processes, leveraging its extensive supply chain capabilities. Sharp aims to bolster Japan's AI infrastructure and plans to commence sales in fiscal year 2027, which begins next April.
Sharp's CEO, Tetsuji Kawamura, highlighted the strategic importance of developing a reliable computing base for AI, viewing it as a significant growth opportunity. The company anticipates contributing to the broader adoption of AI in Japan. The domestic AI server market is projected to expand significantly, from approximately 900 billion yen in fiscal 2025 to around 4 trillion yen by fiscal 2030 and an estimated 7 trillion yen by fiscal 2035.
Sharp has set an ambitious sales target of around 250 billion yen ($1.6 billion) for its AI server business by fiscal year 2030. The company is also exploring the possibility of joint production with Foxconn in Japan, potentially utilizing Sharp's Kameyama plant in Mie Prefecture. This move follows a broader memorandum of understanding signed by Sharp and Foxconn on June 24, 2026, outlining strategic collaboration across various new business areas including AI infrastructure, energy, robotics, and next-generation communications.
