Seven more cases of Shigella infection have been confirmed among students of a school in Kerala's Wayanad district, increasing the total number of infected children to 16, health officials reported on Friday.
District Medical Officer Dr K T Rekha stated that infectious disease surveillance and preventive activities have been enhanced in the district. She assured that the health condition of all 16 infected children is currently satisfactory and advised the public to adhere to precautionary measures, maintain personal hygiene, and ensure the cleanliness of surroundings and food.
On Thursday, Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan had noted new Shigella cases in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kozhikode districts, but reassured the public that there was no immediate cause for concern. He mentioned that as of June 11, 578 people had shown symptoms statewide, with 55 admitted to hospitals. In Wayanad, where most infected individuals are students from an aided school, contaminated well water was identified as the source of the bacterial presence. Consequently, the district collector declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the affected and adjoining areas until June 14.
Shigella is a bacterial infection causing diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically spreading through contaminated food or water or direct contact with infected individuals.
