Samsung Electronics is grappling with significant internal discord stemming from a substantial compensation gap between its semiconductor (DS) and device experience (DX) divisions. A tentative agreement for the 2026 wage contract includes a special management performance bonus for the DS division, allocating 10.5% of its operating profit without a cap.
This arrangement means employees in the Memory Business Unit, the DS division's strongest performer, could receive up to 600 million won (approximately $394,908) in annual bonuses. In stark contrast, employees in the DX division, which handles finished products, will receive only around 6 million won (approximately $3,949) in company stock, creating an unprecedented 100-fold disparity.
The exclusion of the DX division from the special bonus, despite its profitability, has ignited fierce backlash. DX employees argue that their division's profits sustained the company during the semiconductor sector's downturn and feel betrayed by the union's focus on supporting loss-making DS units. Comments on internal platforms express demoralization and question the fairness of the distribution, with some DX employees stating that a transfer to the DX department is now viewed as worse than missing a promotion.
Even within the DS division, non-memory units like System LSI and Foundry, which are projected to post losses, will still receive substantial bonuses, estimated at around 210 million won when combined with the OPI. This further exacerbates the resentment, as the DX division, which generated 3 trillion won in operating profit in the first quarter alone, receives less than these loss-making units.
Shareholders are also reportedly threatening lawsuits, contending that the bonus allocation without a general shareholders' meeting resolution is illegal. While the vote on the agreement is expected to pass due to the DS union's strong representation, the deepening inter-division resentment raises fundamental questions about Samsung Electronics' integrated corporate structure and overall organizational cohesion.
